CHAPTER NINETEEN

I stood back to appraise my makeup after trying to conceal my fading bruises. After spending last night giving Ash comfort in a variety of ways, I’d come home to collapse in my own bed for a while. My alarm woke me shortly before sunset. I’d forgotten to turn the damn thing off. I didn’t work tonight. At this rate, I wouldn’t be working for a while. I made a mental note to check if giving my other staff members a raise would fit in the budget. They’d been so helpful with filling in for Rogue and me.

I’d awoken with a strange sensation clawing in my gut. Hunt. Kill. Rinse. Repeat. Like a desperate need, it grabbed hold of me, making demands. Demands that I wanted to appease. Anything to ease the craving.

The things I thought about doing scared the hell out of me. The call of the growing void made unreasonable demands. Having Hex as our keystone didn’t seem to be helping slow the growth of the vast abyss. Or maybe it was, and things were really that bad.

I knew that I should order takeout and stay in for a quiet night of painting. That’s not what I did though. Twenty minutes later I strolled into The Wicked Kiss alone and ambled up to the bar. I ordered a drink, fully intending to nurse it while I waited for my prey to reveal themselves. It didn’t take long.

As was expected in a place like this, a few vampires approached me seeking a snack. I politely turned them all down. There were only two vamps I wanted to bite me. Neither of them knew that I was here. Nobody did. If they knew what I was up to, they’d have stopped me. It was dangerous. I knew that. It wasn’t enough to deter me. After the last couple nights of Caspian chaos, I needed this release.

Patrons expected that the vampires here would behave themselves. I knew better. So when I saw a vampire leading an unsuspecting woman out through the rear exit on the other side of the dance floor, I set my drink down and followed.

I wondered what excuse he used to avoid taking her upstairs. Safety was only guaranteed inside this building. Leaving with a vampire gave them free reign to do anything they damn well pleased. Rogue had planted the seed that made me want to hunt a vampire. Bigger game meant a bigger chase and a more satisfying kill. I had no interest in the predictability of a human hunt.

A few moments after the couple exited, I followed them out. They crossed through the parking lot to the front street. I was mildly surprised he hadn’t taken her down the back alley. Following them along the busy front street allowed me to keep up without drawing suspicion. Until they turned down an empty side street.

Something pinged in my brain, telling me to turn back. The need to hurt this guy insisted that I ignore it. I moved on autopilot, following them to a small park at the end of the street.
